FULL AND PARTIAL DENTURES

Staina House Dental Practice

Dentures for Missing Teeth

Dentures are removable replacements for lost or missing teeth. These prosthetics are skillfully designed to replicate the appearance and functionality of your natural teeth. Using modern techniques, our dentists take pride in crafting well-fitted, high-quality full and partial dentures that restore your smile and enhance your ability to eat and speak comfortably.

Complete or Partial Dentures

At our Gastang practice, dentures come in two types: complete and partial. Complete dentures are used when all natural teeth are missing, offering a comprehensive solution to restore both oral function and aesthetics.

Partial dentures are used when you still have some of your natural teeth and may be considered as an alternative to a dental bridge or implant. Sometimes, dental implants are used in conjunction to provide the best possible outcome. This is known as a treatment called implant-retained dentures.

A denture can be further classed as either conventional or immediate. In some cases, our dentists may recommend a crown to protect a weakened tooth before starting your denture treatment plan to ensure long-term stability. Conventional dentures are made after the teeth are missing, whereas immediate dentures are made before the teeth are planned to be removed, so you are not left with any gaps.

How are Complete and Partial Dentures Made?

Full and partial dentures can be made from a variety of materials depending on your needs. All are designed to feel as comfortable as possible, whilst simultaneously providing you with a natural-looking smile. At Staina House Dental Practice, we use Schottlander’s Engimalife+Teeth, the highest-quality dentures available and winner of the Queen’s Award. Our dentists spend time making sure every complete or partial denture meets the functional and aesthetic needs of each patient. In most cases, we make a trial prosthetic so that you can see and feel your denture before it is finished.

The technicians that we use have many years of experience and produce work of the highest quality.

Denture Repairs

Dentures may become damaged or broken for many reasons. Whether they have been dropped by accident or broken due to the natural changes in your mouth over time, it is always best to visit us for an examination. Our dentists will explore the cause of the problem and strive to prevent further breakage. If your denture is broken, do not attempt to repair it using products such as super glue as this can further weaken it. Contact us to make an appointment so we can arrange for a professional repair.

How long does it take to get used to dentures?

Most patients adjust to their new dentures within a few weeks. Full and partial dentures may feel unfamiliar at first, but regular wear and small adjustments from your dentist help them settle comfortably.

Is it normal for dentures to feel loose at first?

Yes. Both full and partial dentures can feel slightly loose initially as your mouth adapts. As your muscles learn to support them, they will begin to feel more secure. If looseness continues, we can review the fit for you.

Why do my dentures keep slipping when I eat?

Slipping often happens when dentures need adjusting, relining or replacing. This is common with older partial dentures or if your gums and bone have changed shape over time.

How do I stop the lisp when speaking with dentures?

A mild lisp is common at first. Reading aloud, practising slower speech and wearing your dentures consistently usually help the lisp disappear as your mouth adapts.

Can I sleep in my dentures every night?

We advise removing full and partial dentures overnight. This gives your gums time to rest and helps prevent irritation and infections.

What should I avoid eating when I first get dentures?

Stick to softer foods at first while adjusting to your new dentures. As your confidence grows, you can gradually return to a more normal diet.

How often do dentures need to be relined?

Most full and partial dentures may need relining every 1–2 years, depending on natural changes in your gums and bone structure.

Why do my dentures give me bad breath?

Bad breath often occurs when dentures aren’t cleaned thoroughly. Removing them at night and brushing them daily helps keep them fresh.

Can people tell I’m wearing dentures?

Modern dentures, including high-quality full and partial dentures, are designed to look very natural. Most people won’t notice unless you tell them.

Should I get dentures or implants instead?

Both options restore missing teeth effectively. Partial dentures or full dentures may be ideal for some patients, while implants offer a more fixed, long-term solution. Your dentist will help you choose the best approach for your oral health, lifestyle and budget.
