What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a great option for replacing one or more missing teeth and is fixed to a tooth/ teeth next to the space. It is a useful alternative to a denture or implant.
As the name suggests, a dental bridge is used to ‘bridge the space’ where you have a missing tooth. The false tooth or ‘pontic’ is attached to one or both teeth either side of the space, known as ‘abutment teeth’. Terms such as conventional cantilever and fixed-fixed can be used to describe bridgework. Conventional bridgework involves preparing the teeth similar to when one prepares a tooth for a crown or cap. Adhesive bridges such as the Maryland bridge allow a gap to be filled without as much preparation as a conventional bridge. Unlike a denture, a dental bridge is a permanently fixed in the mouth.
Depending on where in your mouth the bridge will be placed it can be made from metal, porcelain or a combination of the two materials. For example, if the bridge is to replace a front tooth it can be made using porcelain or tooth coloured materials which will give the best appearance and blend as closely as possible with the surrounding teeth.
