White Fillings, Tooth Coloured Fillings and Bonding
At Staina House in Garstang our dentists use white fillings to provide you with teeth that not only look great but are strong and healthy too. White fillings are also known as tooth coloured fillings or dental bonding. They can be made from a variety of materials, the most common of which is composite resin. Composite resin is a mixture of resin and glass particles which when placed correctly can look just like a natural tooth. For this reason they are a very effective form of cosmetic dentistry that can improve the health of your teeth.
White fillings can be placed to treat decayed or broken teeth whether these are newly diagnosed or replacements for old amalgam (silver) fillings. They can be suitable for teeth at the front and back of your mouth.
The tooth coloured materials we use are ‘adhesive’ ie they bond to the tooth structure unlike some alternative filling materials. This means we can preserve as much of the healthy part of the tooth as possible. The benefit of this to the tooth is that you are less likely to suffer complications following the filling that may require further treatment.
Dental Inlays and Onlays
In some situations there may not be enough healthy tooth left to consider direct composite white fillings. If this is the case, it may be possible to place an alternative restoration known as an dental inlay or onlay. These restorations use stronger tooth coloured materials such as Porcelain. Dental Inlays and Onlays are made in a dental laboratory before being placed in the mouth by your dentist. They are placed using similar adhesive techniques to the direct fillings.
The inlay/onlays provide extra strength for teeth that are considered more fragile or compromised. The dental laboratory we use are highly experienced in creating natural looking porcelain dental inlays and onlays.
